Voice announcer (speech synthesiser or pre-recorded audio module) systems are installed in elevator cars to assist visually impaired passengers and to improve the travel experience. The system triggers audio announcements via the floor position signal from the controller: floor number, direction of travel, door opening/closing, and overload or emergency messages. EN 81-70 (accessibility) requires a voice announcement of the floor at each landing and of the direction of travel at transfer floors; IBC and ADA (USA) have equivalent requirements. Audio output level is typically 55–70 dB(A) measured at 1 m, adjustable to avoid disturbing quiet environments. Modern systems support multiple languages with automatic language selection by building configuration or via the destination dispatch interface. The voice module interfaces to the elevator controller via RS-485, CAN, or digital I/O. Emergency announcements (evacuation instructions) are prioritised over floor announcements. Battery backup ensures announcements are available during mains power interruption.
