Smart building integration links the elevator controller to the building management system (BMS) or building automation system (BAS) via standard protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, KNX, or OPC-UA. This enables coordinated responses: when a fire alarm activates, the BMS signals elevators to initiate fire service recall; when access control grants a visitor a specific floor, the elevator destination dispatch system is pre-programmed with that floor; when the building enters night mode, elevators reduce to minimum service. Energy management integration allows the BMS to optimise elevator power consumption alongside HVAC and lighting to stay within peak demand limits. Modern integrated buildings use open API platforms to allow multiple vendor systems to interoperate. Smart integration is a key requirement for LEED, WELL, and BREEAM building certifications.
