Energy saving mode (also called standby mode or sleep mode) activates automatically after the elevator has been idle for a configurable period. In this state the car interior lighting dims or extinguishes, the ventilation fan switches off, the display may blank, and the drive system powers down to a low-standby state. When a new call is registered the system restores full operation within a few seconds. Modern VFD-equipped elevators also reduce power in the drive during floor-to-floor travel by adjusting motor output to the minimum required for the load. Energy saving features contribute to compliance with EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and ISO 25745 elevator energy performance standards. Standby power consumption has become a key procurement criterion in sustainable building certifications such as LEED and BREEAM.
