Notified bodies (NBs) are third-party conformity assessment organisations accredited by national accreditation bodies and formally notified to the European Commission under Directive 2014/33/EU. Their role in the lift sector includes: type examination of safety components under EN 81-50 (issuing EU type-examination certificates); production quality assurance audits of component manufacturers; conformity assessment of complete lift installations (final inspection and testing before CE marking); and surveillance of certified components. NBs must meet competence requirements in EN ISO/IEC 17065. Their accredited scope, certificate database, and NB number are published in NANDO (New Approach Notified and Designated Organisations) — the EU's online registry. Certificates issued by NBs are mandatory for all safety components used in EU-market lifts.
