EN 81-50:2014+A1:2018 specifies how safety-critical lift components must be designed, calculated, and independently verified before use in an EN 81-20 installation. Scope includes: rope and chain safety factor calculations, sheave groove geometry, safety gear type test procedures and energy absorption, buffer compression limits, overspeed governor type examination and certified trip speed, car and counterweight frame structural calculations, and ARD performance requirements. Each safety component must hold a valid EU type-examination certificate from an accredited notified body. Certificates specify the approved operating envelope, installation conditions, and restrictions. Certificate validity is limited and must be renewed after design changes.
