Independent service (or hospital mode, VIP service, or car preference) switches the elevator into a mode where it only responds to car calls registered from the COP, ignoring all hall call requests. This is used by building management staff to dedicate a car for special purposes: moving large equipment, VIP access, hospital patient transport, or cleaning. The elevator must be manually keyed in and out of independent mode; it is typically indicated by a special lamp or display inside the car. EN 81-20 does not specifically define independent service but it is a standard feature of virtually all controller manufacturers.
