Attendant operation (also called operator control or manual control) is a mode in which a specially trained person within the elevator car overrides the automatic control and manually directs the car using a joystick, key switch, or directional buttons. The attendant controls door opening and closing, selects floors, and decides departure time. This mode was common in department stores, hospitals, and high-rise hotels before the advent of reliable automatic control. Today it is used for ceremonial buildings, for accessible floor patrols in hospitals, or as a fallback mode during maintenance. Enabling attendant mode typically requires a key switch on the car operating panel.
