The escalator drive motor provides the continuous rotational force required to move the step chain, handrail, and all associated mechanical components at a constant speed. Most escalators use three-phase AC induction motors with worm or helical gearboxes and electromagnetic brakes. Motor power ranges from 5 kW for short, low-traffic units to over 75 kW for high-capacity airport escalators. Variable-frequency drives are increasingly used to enable soft-start, energy-saving idle mode, and regenerative braking. The motor is located in the lower or upper machine space. Thermal protection and current monitoring guard against overload. Routine maintenance per EN 13015 includes lubrication, belt tension, and brake inspection.
