Elevator wire ropes are constructed from individual steel wires that flex against each other during travel, generating internal friction and wear. A lubricant — typically a mineral oil-based compound or biodegradable grease — is applied during manufacture and must be replenished periodically. Proper lubrication reduces internal wire-to-wire friction, prevents corrosion on exposed outer wires, and extends the rope's fatigue life significantly. Under-lubrication accelerates wire breaks and reduces the rope's actual breaking strength below the design safety factor.
