Annual Elevator Inspection: Mandatory Periodic Safety Check for Regulatory Compliance and Certification

Glossary Annual Inspection

A mandatory periodic inspection of an elevator by a competent person or notified body to verify safety compliance and issue a safety certificate.

Full Definition
Annual inspections — also called periodic inspections — are required by national regulations and standards such as EN 13015 in Europe or ASME A17.1 in North America. A qualified inspector or authorised notified body performs a comprehensive check of all safety devices, ropes, buffers, door interlocks, emergency lighting, rescue procedures, and load-bearing elements. Any deficiencies found must be corrected before the lift is returned to service. The inspection results in a written report and, where required, a safety certificate or sticker affixed to the lift. Building owners are responsible for ensuring inspections are carried out on schedule.
