The elevator emergency telephone (alarm intercom) is a permanently installed two-way audio communication device in the elevator car, required by EN 81-20 clause 5.10.7. It must allow a passenger to call for help even when trapped with no power to the cab (battery-backed operation). The device must establish communication within 60 seconds with a responsible person or monitoring centre capable of organising rescue. Modern systems use GSM, VoIP, or PSTN connectivity with auto-dialling of pre-programmed numbers. The standard requires the handset or hands-free unit to be operable with one hand, reachable from a wheelchair per EN 81-70, and marked with the emergency telephone symbol. Battery backup must provide at least 1 hour of standby and multiple call attempts. Annual testing is mandatory.
