The elevator inspection box (inspection control station) is a portable or fixed control panel that enables authorised maintenance personnel to move the elevator car at reduced inspection speed (maximum 0.63 m/s per EN 81-20) under direct supervision while bypassing normal automatic operation. EN 81-20 clause 5.12 requires the inspection control station to have: a hold-to-run up/down control, an emergency stop switch that directly interrupts the safety circuit, and a device to enable inspection mode that prevents automatic calls from being answered. The car roof station allows a technician standing on the roof to safely guide the car for rail lubrication, door inspection, and top-of-shaft work. The pit station serves similar functions for buffer inspection and pit work. Both stations must be accessible and clearly labelled.
