The car top inspection box is a mandatory control station required by EN 81-20 on all elevator car roofs to enable safe maintenance operations. It contains an enable switch (which must be held continuously), up and down momentary-contact movement buttons, an emergency stop button, a lighting socket, and a power outlet for maintenance tools. When the car top inspection mode is activated, normal dispatching is overridden and the car can only move at a maximum inspection speed (typically 0.3 m/s or lower) while the enable switch is held. This allows engineers to position the car precisely for maintenance work. The inspection box must be positioned to be accessible as soon as the car roof is entered and must be clearly labelled.
