The car toe guard (also called car apron or car skirt) is a vertical steel panel attached to the underside of the car sill and extending downward. Its purpose is to close off the gap between the bottom of the car threshold and the shaft wall below when the car is at a landing, reducing the risk of people or objects falling into the shaft through the toe space. EN 81-20 specifies minimum toe guard dimensions — typically extending to within 50 mm of the landing door sill when the car is at the landing — and requires the guard to be rigid enough to resist a 300 N point load without permanent deformation. The toe guard is particularly important on freight and large platform lifts where the gap between car floor and hoistway can be significant.
