The car door sill is mounted on the bottom of the car entrance frame and features one or more grooves matching the bottom guides of the car door panels. As the door operator drives the doors open or closed, the bottom edges of the panels travel in the sill grooves, preventing lateral movement and ensuring smooth, aligned travel. The sill must be level with the car floor plate and maintained free of debris. In combination with the landing door sill, it defines the step-in area passengers cross when boarding.
