The car crosshead is the upper horizontal member of the car sling, spanning between the two upright stiles. The suspension rope terminations or pulleys are mounted on the crosshead, transferring the vertical rope forces to the sling structure. In direct 1:1 roping, the ropes connect directly; in 2:1 roping, idler pulleys are mounted on the crosshead and ropes pass over them. The crosshead must be designed to carry the full static and dynamic rope loads with the safety factors required by EN 81-20. Overspeed governor rope attachment points are also located on the crosshead frame.
