Car call buttons are the primary passenger input interface inside an elevator car. Each button corresponds to a floor or function (door open, door close, alarm, emergency stop). When pressed, the button's indicator illuminates to confirm registration and the control system adds the floor to the car's service queue. Buttons must meet EN 81-20 requirements for legibility, including embossed or Braille floor designations for accessibility. In hospitals and accessible installations, buttons are located at a height reachable from a wheelchair. Modern buttons use capacitive touch, haptic feedback, or antimicrobial surfaces. In destination dispatch systems, floor buttons inside the car are replaced by a destination confirmation display since floor selection happens at the landing before boarding.
