Hall call registration begins when a waiting passenger presses the up or down hall call button at a floor landing. The elevator control system registers the call, illuminates the button, and adds the request to the dispatch algorithm's queue. The algorithm assigns a car to answer the call based on factors such as current car positions, direction of travel, load, and the number of stops already registered. In conventional systems buttons light until the car arrives; in destination dispatch systems hall call buttons are replaced by destination entry keypads or touchscreens. Registration time is a key metric in traffic analysis — excessive registration-to-arrival time indicates insufficient elevator capacity or poor group control logic.
