Elevator BMS Integration: BACnet, Modbus, Energy Management and Building Operations Guide

Glossary › BMS Integration for Elevators

The connection of elevator control systems to a building management system enabling centralised monitoring, energy management, access control, and emergency coordination from a single platform.

Full Definition
Building management system (BMS) integration connects the elevator controller to the building's central SCADA or BMS platform via open protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or LonWorks, or via proprietary gateway cards. Data shared from elevator to BMS includes: car position, direction, door status, fault codes, energy consumption, and trip counters. Commands from BMS to elevator include: selective floor lockout (access control interlock), fire recall trigger (if not triggered by the fire alarm panel directly), energy-saving sleep mode during low-occupancy periods, and emergency power management. Integration supports BREEAM and LEED documentation by providing verified energy consumption data. It also enables FM dashboards to combine elevator KPIs with HVAC, lighting, and access data for holistic building performance reporting. EN 81-20 and EN 81-72 require segregated safety circuits that cannot be overridden by BMS commands.
