An automatic or manual elevator operation mode that returns all cars to a designated floor and keeps them out of service in response to a fire alarm or fireman's switch activation.

Fire recall (also called fireman's recall, phase 1 operation, or emergency return) is activated either automatically by the building fire alarm panel or manually via the fireman's switch at the designated floor (ground level or other nominated floor). In phase 1, all elevator cars immediately cancel their current calls, close any open doors, and return non-stop to the designated floor, where they park with doors open. The car then remains out of passenger service until the fire alarm is cleared or Phase 2 operation is initiated by firefighters. Phase 2 gives firefighters exclusive manual control from inside the car using a dedicated key switch (as specified by EN 81-72 for firefighters' lifts). Fire recall interfacing with the building fire alarm system is specified in EN 81-73:2020. Continuous power supply to fire recall circuits is required; battery backup is mandatory under EN 81-73.
