Augmented Reality Elevator Maintenance: AR Overlays, Remote Expert Guidance and MTTR Reduction
Glossary ›
Augmented Reality for Elevator Maintenance
The use of AR headsets or smartphone apps to overlay digital repair instructions, component identification, wiring diagrams, and expert guidance onto the physical elevator equipment viewed by a maintenance technician.
Full Definition
Augmented Reality (AR) maintenance tools are transforming elevator servicing by bridging the knowledge gap between experienced engineers and newer technicians. A technician wearing an AR headset (e.g. Microsoft HoloLens, RealWear) or using a tablet app can see digital overlays superimposed on the real equipment: component labels identifying parts by name and part number; step-by-step repair or commissioning instructions anchored to the relevant physical component; wiring diagram overlays on the controller cabinet; torque specifications displayed beside fasteners; and video call sharing with a remote expert (remote expert guidance). AR-assisted troubleshooting reduces mean time to repair (MTTR) by providing contextual information without the technician needing to consult paper manuals or a second colleague. Predictive maintenance systems can push AR alerts when an anomaly is detected — guiding the technician directly to the faulty component. AR tools are particularly valuable for complex modernisation projects, emergency call-outs by less experienced engineers, and cross-border remote support where travel is not feasible.
