Zone Control: Dividing High-Rise Buildings into Elevator Service Zones

Glossary Zone Control

A group control strategy that divides a high-rise building into vertical zones and assigns dedicated elevator cars to each zone.

Full Definition
Zone control is a traffic management strategy used in high-rise buildings where the total travel height makes a single group of elevators serving all floors impractical. The building is divided into low zone, mid zone, and high zone (or more), each served by a dedicated bank of elevators. Sky lobbies may be used to transfer passengers between zones. Zone assignment is fixed or can be dynamically changed by the group controller based on traffic demand (dynamic zone control). Zone control reduces round-trip time, improves handling capacity in each zone, and enables tailored cab interiors and access control for different tenant floors. It is commonly combined with destination dispatch systems.
