Electromechanical brake integral to the hoist machine that holds the car stationary.
Full Definition
The traction machine brake is an electromechanical spring-applied, electrically-released brake mounted directly on the hoist machine. When power is removed, springs apply the brake pads to the brake drum or disc, holding the car stationary. The brake is released by energising the electromagnet. EN 81-20 requires two independent braking elements so that failure of one still holds the load. Brake adjustment (air gap, spring pre-load) is critical: excessive gap causes brake lag; insufficient gap causes heating. Brake tests (holding test, stopping test) are performed at commissioning and periodic inspection.
