The brake rectifier is an electronic module that converts the AC mains supply to the DC voltage required to energise the electromagnetic brake coil. When energised, the coil attracts the brake armature, releasing the brake pads from the brake disc or drum. The rectifier typically includes a voltage suppressor to limit the back-EMF spike when the coil is de-energised, protecting control circuit components. Rectifier failure causes the brake to remain applied or to operate erratically. Modern variable-frequency drives often incorporate the brake rectifier function within the drive output.
