The elevator brake coil is the electromagnetic winding that, when energised by DC current via the brake rectifier, generates a magnetic field that attracts the brake armature against the spring pressure, releasing the brake pads from the drum or disc. The coil is rated for the required holding force and duty cycle. Coil resistance and insulation resistance are measured during maintenance to detect insulation breakdown. A shorted coil causes the brake to release without command; an open circuit prevents brake release. Coil replacement requires machine dis-assembly and re-calibration of the brake.
