The toe guard (or apron) is a sheet-steel panel fixed to the underside of the car sill, extending downward to reduce the hazardous opening between the bottom of the car and the hoistway wall when the car is at a landing. EN 81-20 §5.4 specifies minimum vertical height of 750 mm and width at least equal to the door opening. It must be rigid, smooth on the landing face, and inclined no more than 60° from vertical. A missing or damaged toe guard is a serious non-compliance finding during periodic inspections.
