Landing doors (also called hoistway doors or hall doors) are the building-side doors at each floor opening. They remain closed and locked at all times except when the car is within the landing zone. An electromechanical interlock — verified before the car can move — ensures no door is open unless the car is present. EN 81-20 §5.3 requires landing doors to have a minimum fire resistance of E30 (30 minutes) and an unlocking zone of ±0.20 m around the exact floor level. The mechanical lock prevents manual opening from the landing side without a special release key, except at the interlock device itself.
