Step demarcation lights are LED or fluorescent strips embedded along the yellow demarcation lines at the front and sides of each escalator step. They make the step edges visible in low-light conditions and draw passenger attention to the step boundary, reducing the risk of mis-stepping when boarding, riding, or alighting from the escalator. EN 115-1 (Safety of escalators and moving walks) recommends step demarcation illumination and specifies the yellow colour for step edge demarcation strips. The lighting system is powered from the escalator's main supply and typically monitored so that a failed lamp generates a maintenance alert. Step demarcation lights are standard on modern escalators in transit, retail, and public building applications where passenger safety is paramount.
