Escalator skirt panels are smooth vertical surfaces — typically steel or aluminium — fixed on each side of the step band, flush with or slightly recessed from the step sill level. They minimise the gap between moving steps and the fixed structure to prevent clothing or footwear from becoming trapped. Anti-static skirt brushes or deflector strips are often fitted at the base of the skirt to guide feet away from the edge and further reduce entrapment risk. EN 115 specifies maximum permissible gaps between step sills and skirt panels.
