The safety gear housing is a precision-machined or fabricated steel assembly that holds the safety gear jaws, wedges, or rollers and mounts the entire safety gear unit to the bottom of the car frame or counterweight sling. It must transmit the enormous deceleration forces generated during a safety gear activation to the car frame without distortion. Housing design determines the type of safety gear (instantaneous or progressive) and must be matched to the guide rail section. After any safety gear operation, the housing and its retaining hardware must be inspected for damage before returning to service.
