Progressive safety gear (also called wedge-type or roller-type safety gear) uses a spring-backed wedge or series of rollers that progressively increase grip as the car decelerates. The design limits peak deceleration to between 0.2 g and 1 g, protecting passengers and the car structure. EN 81-20 §5.6 Table 2 defines acceptable deceleration ranges based on rated speed and whether the gear is for a car or counterweight. Progressive gear is mandatory for elevators with rated speed above 1.0 m/s. After any safety gear activation, the device must be reset by a competent person and a full inspection conducted before return to service.
