Elevator pit waterproofing refers to the combination of civil works and drainage provisions that prevent water ingress into the pit from groundwater, surface drainage, or burst pipes. A flooded pit can damage buffer oil, contaminate hydraulic oil, corrode guide rail brackets, and create electrical short-circuit hazards. EN 81-20 requires drainage or collection provisions in pits susceptible to flooding. Waterproofing methods include: tanked waterproofing (crystalline coatings or bituminous membranes), drain channels and sump pits with water-level alarms, and sealed cable entries. The pit stop switch and electrical installations must be rated for wet conditions. Regular inspection of pit drainage is part of the maintenance schedule.
