The pit stop switch (pit emergency stop) is positioned near the pit ladder access point so maintenance engineers can activate it immediately upon entering the pit. Activating the switch opens the safety circuit, preventing the car from moving. A two-position switch design ensures the car cannot restart until the switch is deliberately reset and the technician has exited. EN 81-20 §14.2 requires that the pit stop switch operate before the person reaches the refuge space. A convenience power outlet and lighting switch are typically co-located. Some modern designs integrate an interlock that verifies the pit access door is closed before allowing normal operation.
