EN 81-20 clause 5.2.1.5 mandates at least one 230 V, 50 Hz earthed socket outlet in the elevator pit. It must be protected to at least IP44, suitable for use in the damp conditions typical of pits. The socket is supplied via the pit inspection box from the main elevator distribution board and must be protected by a residual current device (RCD) rated at 30 mA to protect maintenance personnel. The circuit must be independent of the car lighting circuit. The socket must be installed at a height accessible from the pit floor, typically 0.5–1.5 m above pit floor level, and clearly labelled.
