The elevator pit inspection box is a wall-mounted or free-standing enclosure located in the pit area, housing controls required by EN 81-20 clause 5.2.6. It typically incorporates a pit stop switch (red mushroom head), an inspection travel control device enabling low-speed movement of the car from within the pit, a pit lighting switch, and a 230 V socket outlet. The enclosure must be IP44-rated minimum, clearly labelled, and positioned so that it is accessible from the pit access door before a person fully enters the pit. Wiring must comply with EN 81-50 and local electrical codes.
