EN 81-20 clause 5.2.1.4 requires permanent electric lighting in the elevator pit providing a minimum illuminance of 50 lux measured 1 m above the pit floor. The luminaire must be protected against mechanical damage (typically a caged or industrial-grade fitting) and activated independently via a switch at the pit inspection box. Wiring must be in conduit or armoured cable. The circuit is typically supplied from the main elevator distribution board on a dedicated protective circuit. LED luminaires are now standard due to long service life and low heat output. The lighting must remain functional when the elevator is out of service.
