Pit presence detection systems use optical, infrared, or pressure-sensitive devices to detect a person in the elevator pit. When triggered, the system activates the pit stop switch circuit, preventing car movement toward the pit. This is increasingly required by modern safety standards for risk reduction during maintenance. EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 include requirements for pit access and stopping means. Typical implementations include light curtains across the pit access door, pressure mats on the pit floor, or PIR sensors. The device must be fail-safe (fail to stop) to ensure protection even on sensor failure.
