The pit access ladder is a permanently fixed ladder allowing maintenance personnel to safely enter and exit the elevator pit. EN 81-20 requires a fixed ladder when the pit depth exceeds 0.5 m (or 1.0 m in some interpretations), positioned to allow access without crossing under the car. The ladder must have a clear width of at least 0.35 m, non-slip rungs, and be accessible from the pit entry door without climbing over an obstacle. If the pit depth exceeds 2.5 m, a landing platform may be required. The ladder top must extend above the pit floor sill by at least 1.0 m to assist entry.
