The safety plank (pit prop or car stop) is a mechanical device that is physically inserted or deployed under the elevator car or counterweight to prevent downward movement during maintenance work in the pit. It provides a positive mechanical stop that is independent of electrical safety circuits. EN 81-20 allows the use of a safety plank as an alternative or supplement to the pit refuge space. The device must be capable of supporting the weight of the car plus its rated load and must be clearly identified and easily accessible. It is typically stored in the pit when not in use.
