Motor Encoder

Glossary › Motor Encoder

Rotary encoder mounted on the hoist motor shaft providing speed and position feedback.

Full Definition
The motor encoder is a rotary position transducer (incremental or absolute) coupled directly to the hoist motor shaft. It provides the variable-frequency drive and elevator controller with real-time motor speed, direction, and angular position data. This feedback enables precise speed regulation, accurate floor positioning, and safe speed monitoring. For safety-rated applications, a dual-channel (redundant) encoder or a separate safety encoder is required to meet SIL 2/3 requirements. Encoder resolution is typically 1024–4096 pulses per revolution; higher resolution improves levelling accuracy and smooth start/stop.
