The floor level sensor (levelling sensor or door zone sensor) detects when the elevator car is within the levelling zone (typically ±50 mm of the exact floor level) to initiate accurate stopping and re-levelling. Magnetic vane-and-sensor pairs or optical sensors mounted on the car interact with steel plates (vanes or flags) fixed in the hoistway at each floor. Modern systems use absolute position encoders instead of discrete sensors, providing continuous position information for smooth levelling and improved floor-to-floor accuracy (typically ±5 mm in service).
