The machine room ladder provides a permanent means of safe access for maintenance personnel to reach the elevator drive machinery, controller, and associated equipment. Standards such as EN 81-20 specify minimum rung spacing, width, side rail clearance, and the requirement for a rest platform if the ladder height exceeds a defined limit. The ladder must be constructed of durable, non-slip material and anchored securely to withstand maintenance loads. Safety hoops or cages are required on ladders above a certain height. Access doors to machine rooms must be lockable and restricted to authorised personnel only. Ladder condition is checked during annual inspection.
