The lighting transformer in an elevator installation reduces the main supply voltage to a safe extra-low voltage (SELV) level — commonly 12 V or 24 V AC/DC — for powering car ceiling lights, floor indicator displays, pushbutton illumination, and signage. Using SELV complies with IEC 60364-4-41 requirements for protection against electric shock in the confined space of the car. The transformer is typically located in the controller cabinet or the car roof electrical box. Thermal protection and fusing safeguard against overload.
