The car lighting circuit is a separate low-voltage circuit (typically 230 V AC or 24 V DC) that powers the car ceiling lights, position indicator display, push-button panel backlighting, and ventilation fan. It must be independent of the main drive circuit so that lighting remains on when the drive is cut for safety reasons. EN 81-20 requires emergency lighting capable of providing a minimum illuminance for at least one hour following main lighting failure, supplied by a battery or UPS within the car or traveling cable circuit. Emergency lighting activation must be automatic on mains failure.
