Hoistway ventilation is required by most elevator codes to prevent excessive heat build-up from drive machinery and electrical equipment within the shaft. Natural ventilation uses permanent openings at the top and bottom of the hoistway; mechanical ventilation uses fans where natural airflow is insufficient. In fire mode, hoistway vents may be used as part of a smoke control strategy to maintain tenable conditions for fire-fighting lift operation. Ventilation area requirements are specified in EN 81-20 and vary according to shaft volume and heat dissipation of installed equipment. Regular inspection checks vent openings are unobstructed.
