Fire service mode — also called Phase 1 fire recall — is activated by a smoke detector signal or a key switch at the designated landing (typically the ground or lobby floor). All cars in the group return non-stop to the recall floor, doors open, and the cars remain out of passenger service. Firefighters then use Phase 2 operation to control individual cars from inside. EN 81-73 specifies the behaviour of lifts in fire conditions, including recall floor priority, recall timing, and signalling requirements. Fire service mode is mandatory for buildings with firefighter lifts.
