The fireman's switch (or fire service operation) is activated by the building's fire alarm system or manually via a key switch at the designated fire service access level. Phase 1 operation recalls all elevators to the designated floor and holds doors open, allowing occupants to exit and firefighters to take control. Phase 2 gives a fire service officer exclusive control from inside the car, enabling access to any floor. EN 81-72 (Firefighters lifts) defines full requirements including dedicated shaft, power supply, car dimensions, and communication. Standard elevators with a fireman's switch must comply with the relevant national building code for Phase 1/2 operation.
