Final limit switches (terminal stopping devices) are hardwired into the safety circuit as the last line of defence against extreme over-travel. They are positioned beyond the normal slowdown and stopping zones at each end of travel. If the car passes the final limit switch, the safety circuit opens, cutting drive power and engaging the electromagnetic brake regardless of controller command. Unlike normal limit switches that return to normal automatically, final limit switches require manual reset. EN 81-20 §14.2 requires both an upper and lower final limit switch independent of the normal stopping circuit. They must operate before the car strikes its buffer under any condition.
