Glossary Electromagnetic Brake

A spring-applied, electrically-released holding brake on the traction machine that keeps the elevator stationary when the motor is de-energised.

Full Definition
The electromagnetic brake (also called a motor brake or disc brake) is the primary holding device of the traction machine. It operates on the fail-safe principle: a powerful compression spring clamps brake pads against the brake drum or disc whenever the machine is unpowered. When the motor receives a run command, the brake coil is energised, generating a magnetic field that pulls the armature against the spring, releasing the brake. EN 81-20 §5.9 requires the brake to hold 125 % of rated load torque and be able to stop an overspeed car in an emergency. Brake lining thickness must be checked during maintenance.
