A modernisation project focused on reducing an elevator's energy consumption through component upgrades.
Full Definition
An elevator energy retrofit involves replacing or upgrading specific subsystems to reduce electrical energy use without a full cabin or shaft rebuild. Typical measures include: replacing a DC or two-speed AC machine with a permanent-magnet gearless machine; installing a regenerative variable-frequency drive that feeds braking energy back to the mains; upgrading cabin lighting from fluorescent to LED; fitting standby (eco) mode controls; and adding energy monitoring hardware. ISO 25745 provides a framework for measuring energy class before and after retrofit. Payback periods vary from 3 to 8 years depending on traffic intensity and energy prices. EN 81-80 assessment should be performed concurrently to address any pending safety gaps. Energy retrofits may qualify for government incentive schemes and building sustainability certifications.
